The heart of each S.W. Cole office is the laboratory. Each of our five offices features a fully equipped laboratory, and our Augusta, Bangor and Gray offices offer specialized testing capabilities as well. For example, we conduct asphalt and pavement testing in Bangor, hydraulic conductivity testing in Bangor and Augusta, and Alkali Silica Reaction testing at our Gray office. For larger projects, we can set up a completely equipped mobile laboratory right at your project site. Our self-contained mobile laboratory is equipped with a moisture room for sample storage, heat-test ovens, and a complete array of testing equipment.

Tools & Technology
These are a few of the many tools we use to deliver testing services and reliable data analysis for your projects.

Mechanical Compactor
This equipment is an integral part of the moisture-density test for measuring the compaction of fill on construction sites.

Triaxial Hydraulic Conductivity Cell
A soil sample is placed in this cell and the device measures the rate at which water flows through the sample. This test is particularly useful in assessing soils used as liners and cover material in landfills and lagoon liners.

Concrete Compression Test
Concrete strength varies depending on the amount of cement, aggregate, water, and additives. To test the strength of concrete on a construction site, our technicians first make observations and test the concrete mixture in the field, then make concrete cylinders to test several days to weeks later during the cure cycle. For existing projects, we core concrete from slabs, dams or walls and test the core samples using the same equipment.

Soil Consolidation Frames
To evaluate how soils will perform under the weight of a proposed structure, gotechnical engineers at our Bangor and Augusta labs test samples using soil consolidation testing equipment to measure soil load response.

Concrete Specimen Storage Tank
For concrete testing on airport runways and other specialized applications, our engineers make concrete beams instead of cylinders. These samples are then stored in solution until the specified testing date, when compression tests are carried out.

CAD Technician
Advanced CAD technology is also a part of our field and laboratory testing tool kit. Our experienced CAD technicians work on a variety of projects, from soil science plans and hydrogeologic flow nets to exploration plans and foundation details. Here, a CAD Technician digitizes a hydrogeologic flow net for use in computer modeling and analysis.
