Johanna E. Szillery, C.S.S. has earned Certification as a Soil Scientist in Maine. To earn Certification as a Soil Scientist in Maine, applicants must meet education and experience requirements and must pass the Fundamentals of Soil Science Exam administered by the Soil Science
Society of America’s Council of Soil Science Examiners (CSSE) and the Soil Science Specialty Area Examination administered by the Maine Board of Certification for Geologists and Soil Scientists.
Ms. Szillery joined S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. in June 2006 as a Soil and Wetland Scientist. Johanna was born in Budapest, Hungary, and grew up in Illinois and Pennsylvania. She attended high school outside of Philadelphia, and discovered her interest in the sciences while in school there. While earning a B. A. in Biology at Drew University in New Jersey, she assisted in research focused on indicators of forest health and botanical diversity in Minnesota and New York. She also worked at Shenandoah National Park, monitoring forest health and the extent of invasive species.
After graduation, Johanna worked for the USDA-NRCS digitizing soil surveys, and she discovered the fascinating link between soils, botany, geology, and geomorphology. She pursued a Master of Science degree in Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Maine. Her research focused on the impact of acid rain on forest soil chemistry. Upon graduation with her M.S. degree, she continued to assist with research in soil and surface water chemistry, acid rain, and forest ecology at the University of Maine.
Johanna's responsibilities at S. W. Cole include conducting wetland delineations, vernal pool assessments and soil surveys, and assisting project teams with environmental site assessments and geologic investigations. Johanna's experience in wetland science and soil science includes data collection, wetland delineation, wetland functional assessments, state and federal natural resources permitting, habitat assessments, and GPS.
