Stephen Cole epitomizes hard work – he worked his way through college, earning AS and BS degrees in Civil Engineering, while he and his wife Wendy raised two daughters. Steve was employed as a Geotechnical Engineer at Jordan Gorrill Associates (JGA) when in 1978 the company closed its offices in Presque Isle and Bangor. Some employees had the opportunity to move to the firm’s Portland office, but Steve made the decision to strike off on his own and started S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. He landed his first project in May 1979. It wasn’t long before one project grew to two and then more and he needed help.
Under Steve’s leadership, the firm has grown steadily - albeit deliberately - from that one office in Bangor and one employee to a firm of over 70 employees and eight offices in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Steve “retired” in 2006 and earned his license as a Registered Maine Guide. Today he is as passionate about fishing as he is about engineering. He drops by an office once in a while, but he can often be found guiding clients on fishing trips on Moosehead Lake and the West Branch of the Penobscot River in northern Maine or fishing in Florida or Canada.
